The Commission highlighted widespread concerns about manipulative digital practices, addictive design and insufficient protection of minors, as well as a lack of transparency in pricing, contracts and personalisation. It also warned against regulatory fragmentation as it prepares its impact assessment for the Digital Fairness Act.

ByteDance completes TikTok divestiture required by US law

ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of TikTok, completed a divestiture that established a largely American-owned entity to control TikTok’s US operations. The transaction was necessary to comply with a 2024 federal law which banned foreign-adversary-controlled applications. ByteDance retains minority ownership in the new company but ceded operational control of several aspects of the business.

EU Parliament committee strongly criticises SHEIN about compliance with the Digital Services Act and rules on product safety

The representative of the Chinese marketplace struggled to convince committee members about the measures SHEIN adopted to ensure compliance with EU law on product safety, consumer protection and online platforms. But the EU Commission indicated that no decision has been taken yet on whether to open a formal investigation into the platform.

EU Digital Services Act: Commission admits enforcement bottlenecks before European Parliament committee

He reassured MEPs that the Commission aims to take a number of significant enforcement steps to protect minors in the first half of the year.
