The prominence of media services of general interest has become a central issue in European media regulation. By attending this online training you will understand how prominence rules are defined, implemented and enforced across Europe and why it has become essential for media services, platforms, regulators and policymakers.

The prominence of media services of general interest has become a central issue in European media regulation.

As audiences increasingly access content through connected devices, interfaces and algorithms controlled by global platforms, ensuring visibility and accessibility of public interest media is no longer a purely national matter. Member States are adopting a wide range of approaches to safeguard prominence, while the EU framework is evolving in parallel, notably through the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA) and the upcoming revision of the Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD).

At the same time, prominence obligations are intersecting with other areas of EU law, including platform regulation and competition rules, raising complex questions about scope, enforcement and regulatory consistency.

In this rapidly changing context, understanding how prominence rules are defined, implemented and enforced across Europe has become essential for media services, platforms, regulators and policymakers.

By attending this online training, you will:

  • Gain a clear understanding of the concept of prominence and its regulatory objectives
  • Understand which media services and which platforms are covered by prominence obligations
  • Compare national approaches to prominence across selected European countries
  • Analyse how prominence is ensured in practice, including through user interfaces and connected devices
  • Understand the role and powers of national media regulators in this area
  • Assess how prominence rules interact with other EU legislation
  • Anticipate future developments in view of the revision of the AVMSD

The training combines legal analysis with concrete regulatory practice and real-world examples.
